 The Alarming Facts of Life - 



Individuals with Developmental Disabilities that receive a Special 
Education Diploma will face a very bleak future, because: 

• 93% of this population will be unemployed upon leaving the public
school system and will remain unemployed for their entire life.
.
• It is almost certain that these individuals will become "Couch Potatoes" 
with no meaningful purpose in life.  They will live on $579.00 per month
(SSI) and need food stamps to survive.
.
• The State of Florida has historically ranked 47th nationallyin providing 
support services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
.
• Due to a severe lack of adequate funding, there are over 16,000 
individuals who are on a waiting list to receive services.
.
• Individuals with developmental disabilities will likely live at home
until their parents are too old to properly care for them, (or the 
parents die).  Only then will the Agency for Persons with Disabilities
place these individuals in a group home or facility (very likely with
people they have never even met)
